How did I survive Thanksgiving?

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day without incident. Mine actually went fairly well. The day began pool side drinking coffee. (Like many of us I have meds to take in the morning before I can even venture into breakfast. Being on vacation breakfast had a late start and consisted of eating a piece of Udi’s bread toasted with Horizon’s Organic Cream Cheese with Lactaid pill of course (see below for coupons link), cantaloupe and blueberries.

Mid-day consisted of a nice walk on South Beach Pavilion a public beach in Boca Raton. It was rather windy so there were a few kite surfers. It was amazing how high they can go in the air. The walk was nice because even though it was windy it was a very warm wind and the water was comfortably warm. The surf was quite rough so it was not a swimming day for me.  But that was o.k. walking in the sand was like a spa date with the ocean consisting of a pedi massage with the sand. My feet felt marvelous. LOL

After we went home for a late lunch, which I was promptly scolded because Hors d'oeuvres would be served in less than an hour followed by Thanksgiving dinner. So I practiced what I preached in one of my previous blogs of surviving Thanksgiving and other social engagements and had my so called “snack”…. a rather large Hormel Natural Choice Ham and Jarlsberg Cheese sandwich on my Udi’s bread with Hellman’s mayo. It came with a side of Plain Cape Cod chips.

On to the Thanksgiving party…..the Hors d’oeuvres were in place as well as the well-stocked bar. Time to be social. I opted out on the Hors d’oeuvres of crescent wrapped cocktail weenies and the little quiches. I also did not indulge in the cheese and crackers but quite honestly I could have had the hard cheese selections. The drinks were easy. If you like beer select a gluten free beer if it is an option. This party had Absolute vodka which is my go to a social event. I normally drink mine with a flavored seltzer water or plain seltzer or tonic sometimes with a splash of a FODMAP friendly juice.  Or just drink seltzer water with a slice of lime. Now you can mingle. J Pretty good so far, huh?

Dinner consisted of typical traditional foods. My plate had turkey from an all-natural turkey (beware some natural turkeys have an added solution. Sodium phosphate is considered natural) mashed potato, green beans (not the casserole) and a homemade cranberry jello mold. There was an awesome looking yam casserole that I could have had but I had the chance of reading the yam can before the dinner so I know what ingredients were in the casserole. Lots of sugars I cannot have.

Everyone stuffed themselves, except me because see I had that nice tasty sandwich before I went. The desserts were awesome but being a good person (of course they did not have pumpkin pie that I wanted to cheat on anyways) I chose the fruit bowl and selected a few pieces for fruit that I can have. Grapes and cantaloupe melon.  All in all it was an awesome day.

As far as how I feel today. I couldn’t feel better and glad I did not cheat. Now I am ready for some more pool side and think we might go hit a bucket of balls.

Feeling thankful I have this energy. J

Thanksgiving, FODMAPS??????…. Confessions of a foodaholic.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Remember to give thanks, hug and say I love you to those around you. This Thanksgiving I am feeling a little out of control. I think it is because I normally cook and this year I’m not. I will let you know how my Thanksgiving goes and if I make the right food choices.

Thanksgiving…. Confessions of a foodaholic.

It is nearly impossible to follow a strict diet and stick to it. How many of you don’t make the right food choices on purpose especially during the holidays? We are all human, right? I know I have caved every now and again. My weakness on Thanksgiving would be the pumpkin pie. Although, I have to say I love everything about Thanksgiving. I don’t think there is one food that I dislike on Thanksgiving.  So, that being said….I have caved on occasion. It may be my fave the pumpkin pie…minus the crust this year.

FODMAPs are tough. There are not many food choices when first starting out and it can be overwhelming. That being said if you look at the overall picture of the foods and break it down it is doable. If you check out my previous post

Surviving a FODMAP Friendly Thanksgiving or any other dinner engagement.

A guide to making better choices

I did list some foods that you can eat on this diet. There is even a recipe for a FODMAP friendly pie crust although it might be too late to make that now. That is o.k. Christmas is coming so you can prepare for that.

Somehow, though this year, I think I am going to be good. Being away from home is not a good time to be a cheater to begin with. We all know the repercussions of that. There are already challenges of making the right choices of foods and then there are no guarantees. So, “I have enough on my plate.” sort to speak.

Have a good one and loosen your belt. I will be back to let you know if I made the right choices or not. :) Gobble, Gobble.

Surviving a FODMAP Friendly Thanksgiving or any other dinner engagement. A guide to making better choices.

Surviving a FODMAP Friendly Thanksgiving or any other dinner engagement. A guide to making better choices.
This year I am thankful for my great medical professionals team and the FODMAP friendly diet. Remember it is always important to check with your doctor and dietitian if you are ever unsure.

So what can I eat I asked myself? It is not my turn to make Thanksgiving. I find that if I am eating at someone else’s house I try to make something that I can eat. Usually, the host is very pleased that you even brought something. (If you are going to a host that cooks mostly from scratch I say make a gluten free FODMAP friendly dessert or an appetizer.) It is kind of like bringing a bottle of wine to a dinner party only you are bringing FODMAP friendly food. Think of it this way. This diet is so new the majority of the people you speak with have not heard of it. For an overview of what FODMAP means check out my blog post here called “First Off, what ta heck is FODMAP?”
Don’t be afraid to tell your host you are on a special diet for health reasons. Why? #1 they may try to accommodate you, although mostly I find their efforts do not matter how good their intentions are don’t quit work out. #2 they realize you have a dietary restriction and will understand when you don’t eat their food. Generally, speaking that is.

So generally speaking this is what you can eat? If you are unsure check to see how it is made. Hint: eat a snack before you go so you won’t be as hungry.

Turkey Gravy only if made with Gluten Free Flour (easy recipe link attached to this blog)
Stuffing is a no, no because of the bread and onions.
Mashed Potato – use lactose free milk/cream or take at lactose pill.
Sweet Potatoes or Yams depending on how they are made.
Carrots
Squash
Peas
Green Beans – not the casserole
Gluten Free Pumpkin Bread
Homemade cranberry sauce using a FODMAP friendly sweetener
Most Jello Molds - exclude the onions

So as you can see your options are not as limited as long as it is a homemade traditional Thanksgiving dinner. You will survive even if you don't eat much for one day you can enjoy some good company. Honesty and being upfront are your best weapons on surviving dinner.

Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I will report back and let everyone know how my Thanksgiving went.

For an easy homemade gluten free FODMAP friendly gravy visit this site. http://glutenfreegirl.com/ Instead of using the turkey or chicken broth make sure you use the juices from the pan of the cooked turkey. Most turkeys now have an added solution added to them so check the ingredients carefully. Try to get an all-natural turkey. Another hint to be prepared is to cook and boil up a turkey/chicken ahead of time and freeze the broth in 2 cup portions so you are already to go.

FODMAP Diet

As you can tell I have not written much lately but it will change real soon. Not only will I be documenting what is working for me I will be sharing some of my own recipes for the FODMAP diet.

I can say if you have not asked your doctor about this FODMAP diet you really should. If they have not heard of it I encourage you to tell them to check it out! It is simple….just Google FODMAP and you will find info out there. Now there can be a problem with that. The problem being everyone that has a FODMAP blog seems to be an expert. That is not saying they are not but some of them are NOT experts and I am sure they do not appreciate me saying that. You will find some very contradicting information and some info will be very out of date. If you want the correct answer seek out a true professional dietitian that has expertise in this area. Getting information from a correct source will eliminate any frustration or confusion with this diet.

Am I an expert? NO! Nor, do I claim to be. This blog is MY experience with the FODMAP diet and the experience is different for everyone. This is more or less say a guideline. This is the disclaimer I use most often:

Please note we are not medical experts. We are only here to supply info that we find or that has been given us and it does not necessarily represent our views. Please, consult your doctor and dietitian for more information about your disease.

That being said check out a FaceBook page “IBD or known as InflammatoryBowel Disease” that I help admin and you can find a wealth of information there. You can ask questions and get others opinion’s. Take information with a “grain of salt” sort to speak because everyone’s body is different and reacts differently to different treatments. Remember to always talk to your doctor about your disease and if you feel things are not working for you and your healthcare providers let him know and/or seek out other experts.
In the meantime, check back often because I have a lot more to say about this diet. My next blog post will be some helpful hints on how to make it through Thanksgiving then another one there after telling you how I made it through Thanksgiving. (Hanukkah)

PS – I encourage questions. Just ask and if I cannot answer I can help point you in the right direction.
